Walking Practical Paths with a Spiritual Map: Fun, Hands-on Applications
of the Principle of Consultation
by Houman Vafai
Overview
This session involved fun, hands-on, and meaningful group activities
that allowed participants opportunities to work together in small groups,
and then reflect about and discuss in a large group the relevant principles
of Baháí consultation. The activities were short but challenging
problem-solving scenarios that required concentrated small-group effort.
Outline
Ice-breaker activities
Whole-group activity: participants had to develop a common language
in order to collectively collaborate to build a tinkertoy model. Principles
at the heart of consultation such as listening carefully, patience and
loving-kindness were addressed.
Introduction into and summary of some specific principles of
consultation, mainly references from Selections from the Writings
of Abdul-Bahá, pg. 87-89
Small-group activities: several groups consulted and constructed
designs that could best protect an egg from breaking if it were to be
dropped from two stories; the other groups consulted and came up with
different systems wherein the most tennis balls could be passed to each
team member (except those on the pitchers immediate right or left) without
them touching the ground.
Three quotations about consultation were used for these activities
and can be found below:
