What Do Various Holy Books of Major World Religions Say About Women?
by Dr. Fereshteh T. Bethel
Overview
This workshops closely examines a 22-page compilation which briefly
introduces the four major religions of Judaism, Christianity, Islam
and the Baháí Faith. Then categorically, thematically
and sequentially it cites representative samples of scriptural references
from each of these Holy Books, in relation to women: their personal,
public and civil rights; duties, obligations, and behaviors; status,
position, and punishments;and their relations to men, husband, and their
children, etc.
Outline
This presentation categorically, thematically, and sequentially examines
representative samples of scriptural references from the Holy Books
of the Old Testament, the New Testament, the Quran, and the Sacred Writings
of the Baháí Faith in relation to women. Its purpose
is to demonstrate that if a woman, in this DAY and Age, is a devout
follower of any one of these four religions, and a staunch believer
of its Holy Book,
1) What would her self-concept be
like? How would she, most likely, perceive herself?
2) As a result of her self-perception/concept,
how would she relate to her husband? Would she consider herself equal,
lower or higher than him?
3) How would her scriptural beliefs
impact the way she would raise her sons and daughters? Would she treat
them because of their gender?
4) How would her belief system impact
the way she relates to other men or a male boss at work and possibly
in the international arena? Would she consider herself inferior, equal
or superior to men?
5) Finally, try to integrate the
scriptures of the four religions and see if there are any differences,
similarities, regression or progression in them.
