Planning for Bahá’í Houses of Worship as Part of Building the Kingdom

by Robert L. Rogers

Overview

The workshop was designed to explore the Bahá’í Writings in regard to planning physical facilities. Rather than “borrow” from other religious traditions, the Bahá’í Faith has unique aspects of facility planning in the concept of the Mashriqu’l-Adhkar. The workshop raised questions and suggested some considerations as to how local Local Spiritual Assemblies might approach the design or development of facilities.

The following topics were included in the workshop:

  1. General thoughts about the design and visualizing of physical space.
  2. Summary of some of the key statements from the Writings in regard to the Mashriqu’l-Adhkar, the “temple of being”, the purpose of our creation of space, and the process of design.
  3. Review of some questions about the design of facilities for the Bahá’í Faith.
  4. Some thoughts about methods of design and building.
