The Heritage of the Bahá’í Faith in America

by Robert H. Stockman

Overview

This workshop looked at the rise of the Bahá’í Faith in the United States and the contributions American Bahá’ís have made to both the country and to the Bahá’í world community.

Outline

1. The Bahá’í Faith has been in the United States for over a century and is now an indigenous religion with its roots in American culture. Examples will be given from Bahá’í history.
2. American Bahá’ís have played very important roles in the development of the Bahá’í Faith worldwide.
3. American Bahá’ís—especially African American Bahá’ís—have made very important contributions to American culture, such as Alain Locke’s contributions to the Harlem Renaissance and to philosophy, Dizzy Gillespie’s contributions to the development of jazz, Louis Gregory’s contributions to race unity, Robert Hayden’s contributions to poetry, and Mark Tobey’s contributions to modern art.
