Day of Honor 2000 Project Day of Honor for African American And Other Minority World War II Veterans (YOUR CITY) NAME DAY OF HONOR GENERAL INFORMATION SHEET Program Description The Day of Honor project is an organized effort to provide a national city by city special event honoring African American, Asian American, Hispanic American, and Native American World War II veterans. The Day of Honor was authorized by a historic Joint Resolution of Congress on May 23, 2000 "calling upon the people of the United States to honor these minority veterans with appropriate programs and activities." Since that time over one hundred cities and towns across the nation have been organizing Day of Honor events in their localities. The goal is to honor those who fought and sacrificed on the battlefield, and then fought the injustice of segregation and racism at home, and to have them witness the dawning of the realization of "E Pluribus Unum" – 'Out of Many One' – the American motto for which they risked their lives. The (Your City Name) Day of Honor program is also aimed at educating the (Your City Name) community and its youth on the contributions of African Americans and other minorities in World War II. The project was created and organized by PEVUE, Inc. with the support of the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame and the National Association for Black Veterans (NABVETS) and the Phelps-Stokes Fund, America's oldest operating foundation serving the needs of African American, Native Americans, Africans, and the rural and urban poor.
